This post will give solution to the trending social media argument about tithing. And also the question of “am i a robber”
Tithing Anchor Scripture: Mal 3:8-12
Malachi 3:8-12 King James Version (KJV)
8 Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.
9 Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.
10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.
11 And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts.
12 And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the LORD of hosts.
The bible text above comes with a question ‘am i a robber”.Answer this question sincerely in your heart of hearts.
Tithing is a matter of the Heart.
The main principle behind tithing and giving is the fact that what we do with our money shows where our heart is. Mat 6 :21
Matthew 6:21 King James Version (KJV)
21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
If you heart is with God you will want to obey all his words in totality.
Why Should I Tithe.
It is a way of teaching us that God must be our first priority-Deut 14:22-23.
Deuteronomy 14:22-23 King James Version (KJV)
22 Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year.
23 And thou shalt eat before the LORD thy God, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear the LORD thy God always.
Returning a tithe to God helps us to remember that he is the owner of everything-Ps 24:1.
Psalm 24:1 King James Version (KJV)
24 The earth is the LORD’s, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.
He is also the source of all our wealth (deu8:18).
God is the source of all good and perfect wealth. So it should not be a big deal for you to return to the giver. But people behave like babies, in the sense that when you give a baby biscuit and you decide to beg that same baby for the biscuit you have given the baby. Some babies raise their shoulder signifying ” no” I won’t give you. You can imagine the baby not giving to the person who bought the biscuit for he/she. That is how people behave to God. Let’s introspect ourselves and make changes where necessary.
Deuteronomy 8:18 King James Version (KJV)
18 But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.
Tithing In Old testament
Most Christian explicitly knows that tithing is in the old testatment( malchi 3:8-12) but they always ask if it is in the new testament.
Also in the old testament Abraham gave a tenth to Melchizedek which is a liking to a kind of Jesus.
The book of malachi describes how men have robbed God in tithe and offering and also states the benefits of tithing
Tithing in new testament(Jesus Christ view of Tithing).
Christ endorsed tithe (Matt 23:23).This tells us that tithing is also for the new testament believers because Jesus spoke about tithing.
Matthew 23:23 King James Version (KJV)
23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
Jesus does not support any thing wrong. If Jesus saw tithing to be means of extortion, as some of my acquaintances and also the recent trending about tithing in social media has seen it. He would have corrected the notion in Matt 23:23 as stated above. But instead he supported tithing and corrected the Scribes and Pharisees who just pay tithe without following holiness in totality. Sequel this, tithing is also for the new testament believers.
Law And Grace of tithing.
Old Testament is the era of Law while the new testament is the era of grace. Christ came, died for us to have this grace.
As believers under grace and not law, we are still expected to pay tithes.
Long before the law was instituted, Abraham and Jacob paid tithe-Gen 14:18-20,Gen 28:20-22.we are the seed of Abraham and are to follow his footsteps gal 3:29.
Galatians 3:29 King James Version (KJV)
29 And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.
Abraham Account of Paying Tithe
Genesis 14:18-20 King James Version (KJV)
18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:
20 And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
Jacob Account of Paying Tithe.
Jacob gave a tenth to God of all he made when he was on exile.
Genesis 28:20-22 King James Version (KJV)
20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,
21 So that I come again to my father’s house in peace; then shall the LORD be my God:
22 And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God’s house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.
Benefits Of Correct Tithing
• God rebukes devourers for your sake
• You can never be financially stranded
• God opens the window of heaven to pour blessings to you.
• All nations of the earth will know and call you blessed.
Where Should I Pay My Tithe.
Your tithe should be paid to where you are been feed spiritually i.e where you worship, e.g Church, fellowship etc.God does not spend tithe. All tithes in a genuine church is being spent on earth to support the work of God. Just obey and see God work.
Advice on Tithing.
Tithing is different from first fruit, giving to the poor, less privilege, widows and paying offering.
My friend and I were discussing recently about tithing. He told me he paid 9.5% out of 10% God told us to pay. In response to that, I told him he just paid an offering instead of tithe. I am not judging anyone but I know every disobedience to God is not good. If he tells you ten percent, give it or challenge him by giving more instead of less.
Tithing Formula = 10% of Income.
How tithe is to be spent in the church.
Our responsibility as believers is to obey God and give our tithes. God will hold the leadership of any church responsible for the way the tithe is used. Your quota is just to obey God.
In Conclusion paying of tithe does not replace the position of holiness. Holiness is keen. Without it, no man can see God. There is acceptable tithe likewise unacceptable. Tithe which is gotten from genuine businesses, work and other means which is not sin to God must be rewarded because, God is not a man that he should lie. But you can’t expect God to fulfill his promise on tithe gotten from Prostitution, Robbery and other dubious means. No wonder some people say I have been paying tithe but no reward.
